Transforming African Visual Culture Through Education
The Department of Graphic Design equips students with both classical craftsmanship and modern digital media competence. Established in 1974, our department has evolved from a small commercial art workshop into a leading tertiary center for visual communication in West Africa.
We nurture critical thinkers who solve complex communication problems for corporate brands, public health initiatives, and digital product ecosystems.

Foundation
Department Establishment
Founded as the Commercial Art Department at Takoradi Polytechnic, pioneering vocational graphic design education in Western Ghana.
Pioneered foundational training in signage, screen printing, and commercial lettering.
1992
Curriculum
HND Accreditation & Polytechnic Law
Upgraded under the PNDC Law 321 to offer tertiary-level Higher National Diploma (HND) in Commercial Art — Graphic Design Option.
Standardized tertiary visual design qualifications across Ghana.

Digital Print & Desktop Publishing Lab
Established the first Macintosh and PC Computer Design Studio with state-of-the-art vector and raster software.
