The institution that later became Takoradi Polytechnic and Takoradi Technical University operated as a Government Technical Institute, providing commercial and technical education.

Following PNDC Law 321, Takoradi Polytechnic became part of Ghana’s tertiary education system and began offering Higher National Diploma programmes during the 1993/1994 academic year.

The Department of Graphic Design Technology was carved out of the former Fine Art Department and became one of the departments within the Faculty of Applied Arts and Technology.
Created a dedicated academic structure for graphic design education, research, entrepreneurship, and industry-focused training.
Takoradi Polytechnic was converted into Takoradi Technical University, strengthening its mandate to provide career-focused technical education, applied research, innovation, and industry collaboration.

The department currently provides HND, one-year and four-year B.Tech, and two-year M.Tech programmes across graphic design, multimedia, photography, advertising, packaging, animation, illustration, printing, and related disciplines.
